Lalmuni’s Hope

What are your dreams for your children? For your grandchildren?

For Lalmuni, her dreams were simple: she wanted them to be healthy, strong, and safe. She wanted her granddaughters to be able to go to school, graduate, and have dreams of their own.

But water was a major problem. For her entire life, Lalmuni had been carrying water for her family from a river near her isolated village. She used that water to care for her elderly husband, who was paralyzed, and in time, was joined on the footpath by her daughters and granddaughters. They had a few water buffaloes, who needed even more water than the people did, making hauling water a full-time job.

In 2024, all that changed.

One of our Fresh Water Friends made a special donation for a well in Lalmuni’s village, and asked for the plaque to be inscribed with one word in the local language: HOPE.

“I want people to know,” she told us, “that there really is hope for a brighter future.”

Two years later, Lalmuni is like a different person. She is lighter, as if she’s shed a great burden. Her granddaughters go to class every day, arriving punctually to learn. Her family is healthier, and she can see the transformation in her neighbors, too. More than 600 people use this well every day - so many that this month, we started work on a second well so no one in this large village is left behind!

For Lalmuni, these wells are a dream come true. More than “just infrastructure,” they are a symbol of care, and the foundation for a future of dignity and hope.
