Help for Our Friends in Nepal

Over the past two weeks, I’ve struggled to process the scale and horror of the landslide and flash flood that wiped out dozens of villages in Nepal. More than 1,400 people are now counted among the dead, thousands more remain missing, and more than 12,000 people are displaced, sheltering in schools, churches, and public buildings on higher ground or farther from the destruction.

The catastrophe didn’t stop there. 

Floodwaters and debris have now flowed downstream into Bihar, northern India, including four districts where we have wells. At least 60 communities where we already have a presence are now affected by contaminated floodwaters.

But there is also something remarkable happening...

The wells you helped make possible in Bihar are providing clean, safe water right now, when people need it most. We are monitoring those wells carefully to make sure that surface water contamination doesn’t compromise the quality of the water they’re producing, and so far, all are sound.

Your generosity is already making a difference in this crisis.

Now, through our partners on the ground, we have identified 185 families who need immediate help. Many have lost loved ones and homes and are now sheltering wherever they can. Their most immediate needs are clean water, food, and comforters for warmth.

A gift of $29 provides one person with 20L of water in a refillable jug, two weeks’ worth of rice, lentils, and oil, a hygiene kit, and a fresh comforter for sleeping.

$138 provides those same essentials for a family of five.

If you want to help restore longer-term access to clean water, $650 builds a well for a village in Nepal where people are taking refuge, and $1,280 provides a hand pump well for a village in Bihar.

We know who needs help. We know what they need. And we have partners in place who can get that help to them.
